3 Senergy Features You Should Be Using

Take a second and think back to your first smart phone. It was shiny and new, full of potential and stacked with features that promised to make your daily life easier. But learning the ins and outs of the phone took time, and required just sitting down and using it. Still, no matter how well you thought you knew your phone’s capabilities, there were always features hidden behind the interface that you wish you’d known all along…

Let’s apply this scenario to using Senergy today. After installation, you were ready to utilize all the features and capabilities that Senergy has to offer. But if you only implemented life-cycle automation of user’s home folders, like most, then you’re only scratching the surface. Take a look at these three great features to start uncovering what you might be missing.

1.    Automated Group Storage Management

Did you know that Senergy can provide the same level of automation you’re using for the management of home folders, to group storage areas? By managing group storage areas with Senergy, you can apply the same policy rules for user storage to group storage areas. But the most exciting feature is the ability to completely automate the creation and lifecycle of Collaborative Storage Areas.

By using collaborative policies to manage storage areas, you can create consistent folder structures for storing files and provide individual team folders for each user within the team. For group storage areas managed on a lifecycle, you can easily configure the policy to automatically tier inactive group storage and limit user access. If you’re in Education, you have the ability to automate Team Storage Areas for staff and even Classroom Storage Areas for students and teachers.

2.    File Grooming

Enforcing corporate use policies for your organization’s file storage while allowing for an open work environment can be difficult. Users could be saving any number of unauthorized files on the network file servers, taking up vital storage space and breaking compliance policies.

File grooming gives you the ability to identify the files in question and take action to either vault or delete the data based on the grooming policy you’ve defined. As an example, one of our customers used a Senergy policy to automatically provision an “Approved Audio and Video Files” folder into each user’s home folder. They then created a file grooming rule to groom all audio and video files not located in this approved area. Other examples include scheduling a grooming operation to automatically delete temp files older than 3 months and grooming user and group storage areas based on file aging to move dark data to secondary on-prem storage locations or even to the cloud. Check out this File Grooming Demo to see it in action.

But wait, there’s more! Did you know Galileo can be used to generate detailed reports on the unstructured data to help with defining the file grooming policies? Senergy and Galileo are two great products that together make up our File Analysis solution, the complete package for unstructured data management.

3.    Data Migration Capabilities

Many of you probably took advantage of the Senergy Cross Empire Data Migration (CEDM) capabilities to migrate from Novell to Windows. Senergy allows you to continue to automate the management of data on the Windows file servers, after the migration.

Migrating data is not a one-time event but an on-going process that organizations are faced with. Migrating data to a new server operating system, server consolidations, hardware upgrades, and virtualization projects, are all events that require migration of data on the network. The good news is that Senergy provides data migration capabilities that you can utilize, because you already own it!

Senergy’s Data Migration options provide the ability to migrate data and its associated rights, ownership, and file system metadata from one location to another on the network. Migration options include the ability to preserve quota settings, overwrite existing files or folders, and remove files from the source location once the data is copied to the target location. You can even schedule data copy operations. Additionally, you can ensure that all contents of the data were migrated successfully with Senergy’s post-migration utilities.

Bonus tip: Did you know that Galileo can be used to perform an analysis and discovery on the source data as part of a migration project?
